Abstract In response to increasing interest in diploid potato ( Solanum tuberosum ) breeding and the production of inbred hybrid varieties, Breeding Genetics section Potato Association America (PAA) organized a symposium on that took place during 2021 PAA annual meeting. Proceedings from are documented this manuscript. Speakers academia, government industry presented their unique perspectives. Presentations covered wide range topics. Potential advantages were introduced, reasons be skeptical about highlighted. The impact might have seed was discussed. Advantages for genetics research emphasized. Aspects tomato reviewed considered as potential models activities. Lastly, an industry-centered view provided. Taken together, these presentations snapshot how viewed moment, vision implemented, thoughtful reflection varieties change variety development process industry.

Reinventing Potato as a Diploid Inbred Line–Based Crop
The third most important food crop worldwide, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a tetraploid outcrossing species propagated from tubers. Breeders have long been challenged by polyploidy, heterozygosity, and asexual reproduction. It has been assumed that tetraploidy is essential for high yield, that the creation of inbred potato is not feasible, and that propagation by seed tubers is ideal. In th...

Advancing Diploid Potato through Selfing Most diploid potato plants are self-incompatible and will not set fruit on selfing, making the development of inbred lines difficult or impossible. Peterson et al. found self-fertile plants segregating within an F1 potato population then used a whole genome scan to observe the approach to homozygosity after three generations of selfing. Many unfruitful a...
